We asked our staff what they’re reading this summer, and here’s what they had to say:
Erin, our virtual assistant:
What I’m reading for fun: The Paris Secret by Natasha Lester
- I LOVE time period novels and am a little more than mildly obsessed with the 1940s, and this book is set during WWII so it’s perfect for me.
What I’m reading to learn: Atomic Habits by James Clear
- This book discusses the unhealthy habits we form and how human behavior is always changing, so why not change for the better! Swapping out the unhealthy habits for better ones can help us change not only our outlook for everyday stressors, but also how we encounter bigger problems that pop up in our lives.
What I think EVERYONE should read: The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy
- This book highlights small changes in one’s life leading to bigger changes. Whether it be in life, work, love, etc. – if you want to change something big, start small!
Kari, our trauma & mindfulness counselor:
What I’m reading for fun: Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
- My daughter has been trying to get me to read the series for a couple of years now. I’m slowly working my way through it and loving it!
What I’m reading to learn: Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zin
- I’m reading this to deepen my own use of mind-body practices and so that I’m better equipped to share it with clients. Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction has so many uses and can benefit us all!
What EVERYONE should read: Leadership and Self-Deception by Arbinger Institute
- This book is not just for people in “leadership.” It really highlights how we get in our own way in life and relationships.
Cori, our couples counselor:
What I’m reading for fun: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
- I’m a big time follower when it comes to reading, and everyone RAVES about this book. Plus, I need to watch it before I see the movie…
What I’m reading to learn: Eight Dates by John & Julie Gottman
- The Gottman’s are my favorite relationship experts. And I need to know what these 8 dates are!
What I think EVERYONE should read: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
- I really love Brene’s ideas and this is the PERFECT introduction to her work! It’s super quick and easy to read – and you’ll walk away with a new understanding of vulnerability.
Kelsie, our counseling intern:
What I’m reading for fun: Choose to Win by Zig Ziglar
- I’m reading this book because of the title. I want to learn more about this idea and thought this book would add to my journey of understanding my choices.
What I’m reading to learn: Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
- I haven’t finished this book but I like it so far. It does a great job describing how to observe my own thoughts, instead of react to them.
Justin, our LGBTQIA+ couples counselor:
What I’m reading for fun: Please Understand Me II by David Keirsey
- I love reading about personality theories to better understand myself and reflecting on how my own and others’ personalities interact.
What I’m reading to learn: The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory by Roberta M. Gilbert
- I think that understanding family dynamics is essential to seeing people as a whole. Our families help shape who we are, how we see ourselves, and how we interact with others.
What I think EVERYONE should read: Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl
- It’s an amazing and tragic story that gets at the heart of existential dread and how we can find meaning in seemingly meaningless times.
